Decorative Metal Sheet Book Cover

Hello blogger friends,

I have a tutorial for you today using the decorative metal sheets from M-D Building Products. I created a cover that I will use for an art journal. You can find the metal sheets at Lowes or Home Depot if you live in the States.

With a ruler and a Sharpie draw lines where you would like to cut. The Sharpie can be wiped off when you're done the cutting.

Use tin snips to cut the metal sheets. Be careful, the edges can be sharp!

You will need two pieces that are the same size as well as a spine.

Use thin wire to attach the pieces together. I found that using the edge of my table was helpful.

Paint all your surfaces. I started off with Patina Paint for metal  but since I only have 3 colors (that don't necessarily go together) I needed to add acrylic paint as well. I found it worked quite well.

Cut pieces of corrugated cardboard to fit the book.

Paint your pieces lightly with gesso and once they're dry adhere them to the inside of your book.

Stamp with script because it just makes everything nicer in my opinion!

Next you can embellish your book. I painted and inked some chipboard pieces from Gina's Designs. I also added some flowers.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial, your comments are greatly appreciated!

  4. Oh my gosh- I saw these metal sheets a few weeks ago at Home Depot and wanted but thought they were a little pricy for me. I can't recall what they were b ut they were BIG sheets: how big are the sheets you bought? I think that I would enjoy making something out of them. Your project is Beautiful!

    1. Thanks Heidi, the sheets are 12x24 so they go a long way. I confess I don't know how much they cost. We don't seem to have them in Canada and the ones I have were given to me. They are very fun to work with!
